The Microsoft-developed application SyncToy works like this: after you pick a pair of folders and you choose an action, the free application will sync the files inside the folders you select. The way the files are synced depends on the action you choose. They can be copied both ways if you go with the Synchronize action, or they can be copied from left to right if you go with the Echo action.

The system requirements for running SyncToy are: 1Ghz processor or better, 256Mb or RAM memory (512 recommended), 20Mb of free disk space, Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0 or newer, Windows operating system (XP, Vista, or 7).

SyncToy’s interface is made up of two panels. The one to the left displays a list of all the folder pairs you created. Select a folder pair and more info about it will be presented in the panel to the right. Click on all Folder Pairs and all the pairs will be displayed in the panel to the right.

Using SyncToy is a very simple 3 step process:
Step 1 – select a pair of folders.
Step 2 – select an action. You can pick one of three actions: Synchronize, Echo, or Contribute. To understand what each option does, a short explanation is presented onscreen. Click More Information to learn more about these options.
Step 3 – give your pair a name.

You can then proceed to preview or run a sync task on the folder pair you create. Or you can proceed to create more folder pairs. The choice is yours.

SyncToy is offered by Microsoft to Windows users for the great price of free.

Easily create folder pairs and then keep said folders in sync with Microsoft’s free tool SyncToy.

Pros

The system requirements for running SyncToy are quite low. You will quickly figure out SyncToy’s interface. There are several actions to choose from: Synchronize, Echo, or Contribute. You can create multiple folder pairs. SyncToy is freeware.

Cons

The application hasn’t been updated in quite some time.
